refraction (2009)
for violin and piano

Written for the Iordens Viooldagen
First performed on January 23 2010

Program notes:
Refraction was written for the Iordens viooldagen 2010. Although I was asked to write for the A category (children from 10-12) I also composed a more difficult version for more advanced violin players. The easier version carries the subtitle Unbroken and the more difficult one Broken.
The title refers to the fact that light (or more general, waves of any sort) changes speed when it passes from one medium to another. Think of how a stick looks broken when it is held in water. Both versions are written in a whole tone scale, but the more difficult one is transposed every beat a bit up or down by a certain pattern.
